Journey

First startup

I grew up in Bangalore, India, among many trees, many books, and many ideas.

At the age of thirteen, my friend and I started our first business: a weekly subscription service delivering used books for toddlers. We were enormously successful. Of course when my grandmother found out, she made us return all the money we had made, but that’s another story.

2000 | Study

I love languages, problem solving, and math.

I studied Engineering at the PES Institute of Technology.

I then moved on to doing an MBA from Management Development Institute and was a GE Foundation Scholar-Leader.

I also hold a Masters in Finance from ESCP-EAP in Paris, France.

2007 | iBanking

My first significant job was as an investment banker with Lehman Brothers. One year after I joined them, all hell broke loose. The subprime mortgage crisis led to Lehman’s business in EMEA being sold to Japanese investment bank Nomura. Many of my colleagues were fired; I was one of the lucky few to survive.

Working in M&A was one of the most intense, and enjoyable experiences of my life.

2011 | Startups

After several years in banking, the entrepreneurial bug bit and I, along with a couple of friends, launched WeekendZing!, a travel startup with curated experiences (similar to Airbnb Experiences today).

The startup scene in India was in its nascent stages, so while we managed to take the idea to profitability, scaling it was still a problem.

During this time I took on several freelancing projects. I consulted for MDA Group, an OEM of coated abrasive products for companies such as 3M, Bosch and Black & Decker and helped them with financial planning and profitability analysis.

2015 | Consulting

Some time in 2015, I joined nilenso, a software cooperative, and haven’t looked back since.

In the early days, everyone was more focused on writing code than running the company. So my first task was to bring order to chaos.

As a startup there is always a lot to be done, and I now wear every hat from strategy, finance, planning, hiring, sales to operations. In addition, I manage most of our client relationships.

I have since expanded my role to include consulting as Product Manager on client projects.
